Site

Large sloping lot in Abbotsford with an existing home in a well maintained Neighbourhood.

Intention

Four vertical feet of old wood ties had given way towards a neighbour, while at the same time the client was searching for a solution to deal with the slope of the front yard, re-work the existing gardens, while maintaining privacy from the road.

Solution

As a new wall was required to replace the fallen wooden ties, we continued the four-foot Keystone wall from the side of the property, around to the front along the road, and stepped it up along the driveway to match the existing wall that was on the other side. To create level garden beds, a second retaining wall was added that paralleled the first.

The existing plant material was quite established with over ten plants, from 6' rhododendrons and burning bushes, to 5' pieris's, needing to be transplanted. Some unhealthy plant material was removed allowing for the introduction of a few perennials where none previously had existed.

As the existing landscape had manicured plant material we continued to work with the appearance of the rest of the gardens by incorporating a swatch of purple Liatris and a swatch of white Liatris. As this was road frontage the common viewer of this space would be someone in a vehicle, thus making large blocks of colour more prominent and appealing. To soften the road and driveway edges, a repeating pattern of three Overdam Feather Reed Grass and one Sweetbox was created to provide four seasons of interest. To welcome visitors to the home, a more detailed perennial garden of Goldstorm Coneflower, Apricot Twist Wallflower and Spring Charm Rock Cress, was created at the end of the driveway with an address sign fashioned out of an old heirloom gate found in the background with heather, lilies, shasta daisies, and helleborus surrounding it.

"Thanks to everyone on the FocalPoint Team for transforming our frontage from old and overgrown to a fabulous two tier retaining wall and gardens. Your suggestion to leave some of our older plants and combine them with newer ones helped us maintain the privacy of the mature garden but with a much cleaner and fresher look. From our first meeting with Lori at the home show, to our consultation with Jenn, and through the interaction with Radek and his crew, we were confident that we had made the right choice with your company. Everything was done on schedule, the site was left clean every night, and we were kept updated throughout the project.
You captured our vision exactly and your recommended choice of new plants to blend with the old was perfect. We were so pleased with the outcome that we have asked your team to design a space we left empty to do something special with a gate that has been handed down through our family. We are excited to see the finished result, which we are confident will compliment what has already been done. You will absolutely be hearing from us for all our future landscape projects."
