Our Riparian projects focus on restoring and protecting natural waterways through thoughtful, ecologically driven design. By planting native species, removing invasives, and creating balanced habitats, we help strengthen creekside ecosystems—supporting local wildlife, improving water quality, and contributing to long-term environmental resilience across our communities.
Situated between the new BC Transit Building in Abbotsford and the creek along the southeast edge of the property, this riparian restoration project by Focal Point was designed to revitalize and protect the local ecosystem. In the spring of 2025, the team planted 4,325 native species and carried out daily summer maintenance including watering and whacking to ensure healthy establishment. Mammal guards were installed to prevent hares from feeding on young shrubs, allowing them to thrive. The carefully chosen mix of native trees and shrubs—such as Bigleaf Maple, Red Alder, Paper Birch, Sitka Spruce, Western Red Cedar, Red-Osier Dogwood, Black Twinberry, Red Flowering Currant, Salmonberry, Pacific Willow, and Snowberry—was selected to restore habitat diversity, improve soil stability, and strengthen the creekside environment. These plantings now provide food and shelter for pollinators, birds, and small mammals, creating a vibrant, self-sustaining habitat that enhances biodiversity and contributes to the long-term health of the surrounding landscape.
Focal Point completed a comprehensive Riparian Planting project at the north end of the new Univar Solutions development in Abbotsford, BC, near Costco. The project began with the careful removal of invasive species, followed by the installation of nutrient-rich garden blend soil to create an optimal foundation for native plant growth. A total of 1,742 native plant species were introduced, including Red Osier Dogwood, Black Hawthorn, Sword Fern, Black Cottonwood, Douglas Fir, Salmonberry, and Pussy Willow—all chosen for their ecological value and ability to support local biodiversity. The area was then finished with composted bark mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring long-term plant health. Beyond the installation, Focal Point was awarded ongoing maintenance for both the roadside ornamental plantings and the riparian zone, ensuring the continued success of the restoration. This initiative not only enhances the natural beauty of the area but also strengthens the local ecosystem by improving soil stability, providing habitat for wildlife, and contributing to overall environmental sustainability in the region.
