Blondin

Site

Existing home in Abbotsford. Backyard has a lawn slope with an 8' elevation difference from top to bottom with a rotten wooden set of steps and deck as access.

Intention

Remove rotten wooden stairs and deck. Install new stone stairs and deck as deck position captures stunning Southern mountain view. New stairs to 'jog' with landings, not just a straight run. Add plants for appeal when sitting on deck.

Solution

Created terraced retaining wall planters with a sets of stairs and walkways leading down to the patio and down to the lower entrance of the home. Walls made of pre-cast concrete block 'Valleystone' and walkways with Interlock pavers in a random pattern. A timber set of steps replaced the old to lead up to the existing wooden deck; topped with 'Exposed Aggregate Treads'. 2'x2' Square stepping stones set in drain rock was used as the walkway from lower patio door to down tap. Slope was filled with sun-loving summer interest plant material to provide erosion control. The plants used were as follows:
RED DRAGON JAPANESE MAPLE
WATERFALL JAPANESE MAPLE
VANCOUVER JADE BEARBERRY
GUMPO WHITE AZALEA
CHERRY BOMB JAPANESE BARBERRY
ICE DANCE SEDGE
AZTEC PEARL MEXICAN ORANGE BLOSSOM
